CANON PERSONALITY:
The defining personality trait that Gilbert possesses has to be loyalty. It's this trait that drives most of his defining moments and dictates his biggest life choices. Even if for most of his life he cannot remember his early childhood, this loyalty distinction begins there. He and his brother are orphaned and on the streets, and are often mistreated because of superstition about people with red eyes, called "children of misfortune" for the ill effects that are said to swirl around them. Gilbert himself is not a child of misfortune, but his younger brother, Vincent, is -- though only one of Vincent's eyes is red. Though staying with Vincent makes his own life more difficult, and Gil admits to considering leaving him, he cannot bring himself to do it. Even if life would be less of a challenge on his own, Vincent is his brother, and Gilbert feels guilty for even having those thoughts. He won't leave his brother alone, won't abandon him as the rest of the world has.

This trait continues through his future relationships. Gilbert is taken in first my Jack Vessalius and later by the Baskervilles and the then-current Glen because he is destined to become the next Glen. He is a loyal servant all along, doing what is asked and expected of him -- until the Tragedy of Sablier comes around. (Later he will reject both Glen and Jack entirely in favor of another loyalty.) From the moment of the Tragedy of Sablier, Gil's life changes. He is flung into the future one hundred years with no memory of his past at all, save for his name. He's taken in by the Vessalius family and becomes servant to Oz Vessalius, a young man around his own age. Young Gilbert is fearful and timid, scared of everything. When Oz is kind to him and informs Gil that because Oz is his master, Oz will look out for him and keep him safe, it begins the new bond that will define his life for the next decade and beyond. Gilbert dedicates himself to Oz as his servant without hesitation or holding back. He's wiling to risk his life to stop Oz from unknowingly injuring his father when they are attacked at the other boy's coming of age ceremony. Gilbert is struck down instead and when he wakes, Oz has been lost to the Abyss. Gilbert blames himself because he was unable to save his master when he was there and thinks he should have been able to, and also because he was controlled by a Chain and hurt Oz because of it.

Because of this guilt and his continued fierce loyalty to Oz (even when Oz is missing for ten years) he agrees to work with Break and allow himself to be adopted by the Nightrays. He makes hard choices, does things that are not comfortable for him, all in an attempt to forge a contract with the chain Raven -- which he manages. Over this time, Gilbert is still the scared, timid, lost child that he has always been, but he learns to put up a defense to the rest of the world. He also faces hard choices and grows harder as a person. Living with the Nightrays is difficult. With the exception of Vincent (also adopted by the Nightrays) and Elliot, all the Nightrays treat Vincent and Gilbert with suspicion and sometimes outright hostility. They don't like that he was able to contract with Raven when none of them were and plot to get rid of him and Vincent. Gilbert tries to act tough and hard to the outside world -- though he develops a genuine affection for Elliot, that even Vincent seems to notice, noting that Elliot's acceptance and presence was one of the few reasons Gilbert could still smile in those difficult days. All the while he is single-mindedly trying to work towards recovering Oz from the Abyss. He's a man obsessed in a way, to the exclusion of nearly everything else.

By the time Oz returns from the Abyss, ten years have passed for everyone except for Oz Vessalius. Gilbert attempts to keep his identity a secret from his master. Instead of the emotional, timid child that he was, he presents as a stoic and cynical grown man -- except this is very obviously a front. He's constructed this persona as a defense mechanism, though in typical Gilbert fashion he's still easily flustered and frightened and trying to be something he's not. He's taken up smoking because Oscar Vessalius smoked, and he thinks the older man is cool. He's still terrified of cats. He's still even more terrified of failing Oz for good. For as bad-ass as he pretends to be, that fear and that insecurity still run strong in him. Despite the fact that much of his new persona is a front, the truth is that Gilbert will stop at nothing to recover Oz and to keep him safe. He has done unsavory things and is no stranger to violence. He is a harder person than the child he used to be, sharper around the edges and driven by the need to save his master from the fate that has befallen him. He can be ruthless, though this softens somewhat when Oz returns and they begin working together to fight against Chains. But even then, he knows Oz is not entirely out of danger. The guilt runs strong in him, and when his identity is exposed by an encounter with the Chain that controlled him the night of the coming of age ceremony, it's clear that the guilt for what happened is still hurting him.

Once Oz knows who he is, they fall back into a familiar routine, like no real time has passed at all. Oz is the most important thing in Gilbert's life -- his touchstone, his true north, the one thing that he knows he has to take care of, to protect. With Oz Gilbert alternates between desperately trying to play the adult and keep his young master in line, and the obedient servant dragged along (sometimes with protest) on Oz's latest escapade, and the unwitting pawn in Oz's latest shenanigans. Gilbert is easily flustered and probably too easy a target for teasing -- something that Oz and Break and even Alice seem to pick up on too well. Though he tries to pretend to be cynical, he's really quite soft-hearted and cares a great deal about people, Oz Vessalius above all. He's terrified of letting him down and not being strong enough to be who Oz needs him to be. Even when Elliot dies, Oz and Gilbert seem in a standoff of mourning where they're both so worried about worrying the other that they dance around their emotions instead of having them properly. Once they manage to actually talk this out, they realize exactly what they're doing. Gilbert worries over Oz. Oz worries over Gil. The sun rises in the east. It sets in the west. And the world turns on.

Even if he adores Oz, this doesn't stop him from arguing and fussing at the blond. Often. With other people, Gilbert's interactions are more prickly. He yells and squawks at Break more often than not, but considering how Break messes with him, that's to be expected. Break is fully aware of how easy it is to push Gilbert's buttons, and he does so. Often. But despite this, Gilbert has outright stated that Break is a friend, and he's risked a great deal to protect him, scolding the older man about accepting help and not doing everything on his own. Their relationship is strange and often very loud, but it's one that (from Gil's end at least) is a strong friendship. But it's a complicated relationship.

So is Gilbert and Alice's. At first, Gil and Alice are at each other's throats -- largely because Alice is competition for Oz's attention and affection. Of course, Gilbert also believes that Alice is also a threat to Oz's life in the long-run and informs her that it'd be okay if she were cast into the Abyss. This eventually changes significantly. He comes to feel genuine affectionate towards her and cares about the loud and energetic girl. They never get along all that peaceably, but there is a mutual understanding and caring between them, and they both care deeply about Oz, which helps them bond significantly.

Gil gets along civilly with most people, coworkers in Pandora and beyond in the circles of nobility that he finds himself running in. Again, this is a front. At Isla Yura's party, it's shown that people who don't know him see him as aloof and attractive and cool when the truth is he's exceptionally nervous and uncomfortable at these sorts of functions with so many people. He's a Nightray though, so he's mostly gotten used to filling the part of a nobleman, albeit an adopted son. Though he harbors a great deal of guilt for "betraying" the Vessalius household by allowing himself to be adopted by the Nightrays, Gil eventually gets over this guilt for the most part. He loves Oscar and Ada Vessalius and considers them family along with Oz more than anyone else, even his actual brother.

Gilbert's relationship with his brother is complicated as well. He doesn't remember their childhood for most of his life, so he holds Vincent at arm's length, afraid to get close to him and not really knowing how to react to him. Part of this is because he is genuinely terrified of the memories that he has lost, afraid of finding out what the truth about himself really is. Even so, he cares about Vincent and is confused and torn when it seems that the other man may not be on the same side of the battle that he is.

Eventually though, he comes face to face with his lost memories, willingly. In this confrontation with his past, Gilbert discovers a strength that he had been entirely unaware of. There's a new and impressive confidence in him. He's slowly starting to shed the fear that he has lived in. The truth isn't easy, but once he's faced it and recovered his past, he can finally move forward instead of hiding in fear and uncertainty. This confrontation allows him to recognize that he is a Baskerville, allows him to realize that he's been holding Vincent away and that he's been too weak because of his own fear to serve Oz as he wants to. This is about where his loyalty rears its head again and he has his Chain burn off his own left arm in order to free him from a binding spell placed there that bound him in loyalty to Glen, a fact that horrified him when he was forced to shoot Oz against his will. Furious and frightened and confused, this propels him to taking that step towards knowing himself and growing as a person. Even with only one arm, he's now more complete. He has a past and a present and more importantly a future that he has chosen. He makes the decision to rid himself of his arm and chooses to serve Oz as he has, to protect him and look out for him.

Even so, despite the sudden confidence and certainty in him, Gilbert is still the fretting and dorky thing he's always been, since when Oz is helping him adjust to only having one arm and talking about all the things he can do for Gil now instead of the other way around, Gilbert frets about not being needed at all anymore, though at least it's brief fretting. He's gained a new determination that informs his actions and decisions. In a way, he's shrugged off the shackles that have kept him fearful and hesitant his entire life and is finally coming into his own. Right around the time the world is ending, so, it should all work just fine.

Over all, Gilbert is a gentle soul who has long pretended at being harder and colder than he really is. He's spent most of his life not being sure who to trust, or if he could even trust himself. Now that he's made those strides at confronting his past and his lost memories, he is steadier and more confident, understanding his choices and what he wants to accomplish -- saving Oz and Alice, stopping Glen, even reconnecting with his brother if it's possible given their circumstances.

POINT OF DEPARTURE: N/A
ABILITIES:
Gilbert has several different categories of abilities. First and foremost are the ones he has through his contract to his chain, Raven. Secondly are his natural physical abilities as a Baskerville. Lastly are the combat skills that he has learned the old fashioned way.

Raven's Abilities
Gilbert is a contractor. Though he was until recently contracted through the blood mirror method that Pandora employs, he's recently reforged his contract with Raven in the way that Baskervilles do. He bears a brand on his chest, but there is no clock hand on his seal, so he is not the same as an illegal contractor and does not have to worry about being dragged into the Abyss because of his contract. The abilities that Gil has through Raven are:

- Teleportation: Using Raven's powers, Gilbert has the power to teleport himself and others, even across dimensions. Using this ability puts a great strain on Gilbert physically and often leaves him collapsed and exhausted after using it.
- Blue Fire: Raven can create powerful flames that can burn and damage chains and people and even Baskervilles. These are what Gilbert uses to burn off his own left arm.
- Sealing: Raven can seal other chains powers. He uses this to keep Alice's power in check so that Oz is not harmed further by their contract.
- Condemning to the Abyss: Gilbert's chain has the ability to drag people to the Abyss

Baskerville Abilities
Gilbert is a Baskerville which means that he has the ability to contract with Chains without the concern of forming an illegal contract and without a need for the Pandora method of a blood mirror. Because of this, his contract with Raven cannot be interrupted simply by destroying the Nightray door or the keys to it. Gilbert also possesses increased healing and endurance because of being a Baskerville. Blows that should kill him do not and he is able to continue on even when he is significantly injured.

Firearm Skills
Gil is pretty talented with a gun these days, but this comes after a lot of practice and work in his youth.

INVENTORY; Clothes, Cravat, Coat, Hat, Revolver and ammo, and his Chain (though that is not a physical thing so much as a non-physical presence that can manifest when called upon)
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? Gilbert looks a little different from his image source in that he only has one arm at the moment.

S A M P L E S;
FIRST PERSON:
[Gilbert will never get used to the voices in his head. He's sure of that. They pipe up when he's not expecting it, and he's yet to have mastered the art of not startling and looking around like he's about to be jumped. It's sort of a problem.]

Hello? [That doesn't stop him from trying it out though.] ...if this is working...

[Okay. Deep breath.] I'm looking for someone. I know he's not here now. But they said people arrive often enough. And if he does, I need to know. His name is Oz. And this place won't be safe for him.

[And even his voice softens at that name before he continues with a description he knows his master would hate. Oops.] Blond hair, green eyes. Cheerful. Small. Definitely small. Probably getting into trouble no matter where he is. If anyone ever runs into him, tell me. [And as an after thought.] Please.

[See? He said please. But now, quieter.] It's not right, for me to be in this place when Oz isn't. I belong at my master's side, no matter what. [So he's sort of pissed off about it.] It's important, or I wouldn't be asking. So... thank you for listening.
